 RORO an innovative service by Konkan Railway's

 Roll-On-Roll-Off (RORO) service where loaded trucks are directly carried by railway wagons to their destination. RORO is a service of Indian Railways operated by Konkan Railway Division. Konkan Railways passes through challenging terrain of western ghats. These western ghats include’s busiest roads, where trucks loaded with goods are being transported. It has been very difficult to drive through roads in these ghats due to undulating surfaces, narrow roads.

To overcome this problem, the Konkan Railways introduced a service RORO, where loaded trucks are moved on train flat wagons. This RORO service was started in the year January 26, 1999.

Konkan Railway operates RORO between two routes  Kolad and Verna ( a distance of 417 km) and between Kolad and Suratkal ( a distance of 721 km). The Kolad-Verna would take 12 hrs through RORO service, whereas 24 hrs by road. And Kolad-Suratkal would take 22 hours through RORO, whereas the road transportation would take 40 hours.

The Konkan Railway Corporation is earning over Rs50 crore per annum. This service is being in use from 18 years, so far over 4 lakh trucks have been carried through this service. 
The service reduces the maintenance cost of trucks, faster delivery of goods, no traffic issues and road safety.
